Good effort, Live truly is in the palm of your hand...Oct 14, 2005
By John M Spangler If you want a good basketball game for your portable, NBA Live certainly is a good bet for you. E.A. pulled it off very nicely. I didn't think Live could be compacted to a "portable level" but this is a very good start for the portable franchise. It's very similar to it's console cousin, all the "SuperStar" moves are intact. Between the leg passes, pass fakes, multiple dunks, power blocks, power moves ETC. With the absence of L2 and R2 buttons and no R stick however, they did have to make some sacrficies. The backdown button is uncomfortably used by holding down "triangle", and you no longer have freestyle moves. Instead, you have your crossover dribble and spin peformed with tapping Triangle and Square. I sometimes do a backdown with triangle when I wanted to a spin, this is annoying.
This is actually the old control scheme on the PS2 before they introduced freestyle moves and veteran Live players will be confused when they go back to playing the console version again. It's old school for sure ,but with the lack of buttons and the R stick, they had to go back to this scheme. Keeping this in mind, getting the open shot isn't quite as easy, as the freestyle moves certainly gave the offense the advantage.
The graphics are a cross between a Playstation 2 game and a very highly effective Playstation 1 game. The player models are not amazing, but they look good enough so you can recognize your big name guys down the court. They left out the sideline action, no coaches, no cheerleaders, no sub players, just the court and the fans in the stands. This is certainly due to the limitations of the PSP, but the ingame action is Live all the way. Player movements are very fluent, it seems very smooth and convincing. I would have liked the option to change the game speed a lil', but its a good default.
I do have some minor nitpicks. The computer doesn't seem to miss, not just the open shots, but launches 3's constantly and seems to make more than miss. It's a given in a real game, players are going to miss 30-50% of their shots, but the CPU is too good for their own good. Good D is a must if you want to have a chance, especially on higher levels. They also rebound the crud out of the ball and offensive rebounds for the human player are a rarity .
Sound is good. Steve Kerr and Marv Albert take care of the commentary and it's about as good as the console version commentary, although expect more repetitive comments. Good sound, and E.A. trax music through and through.
There is no franchise mode this year, there is a full season though which will keep most occupied. One on one too. Overall, a very good introduction for the PSP. If you like basketball, you got 2 choices, NBA 06 and NBA Live, both are worth your dough.

Amazing Game!!! A must buy for basketball fans!!!Apr 23, 2006
Nba live 06 is an amazing game for the psp. It really shows the beauty of the console. It has everything from season games to slam dunk contests. The graphics are one of the best. Its really hard to let go of especially if your playing season mode.
But it could be better....
First of all the controls were kinda hard to master (Being that this is my first game for the PSP). But you get used to it after a while and it gets better.
Also, the loading times are insane. If you are playing online, the game freezes about every minute for like 7 seconds. If you turn off the PSP while the game is running and turn it back on later, you gotta wait like 15 seconds for it to start again(might as well go back to home and reload game again).
The multiplayer is ok, only there arent so many people on because PSPs are really expensive, but if people are on its ok.
The slam dunk contest and 3 point shootout are really hard to get used to. But its alot of fun when you get the hang of it.
It would also be better if the game had some kind of practice mode so you can get better at it without time or other things in your way.
Overall, this game is amazing and its a must buy, whether you like basketball or not.

Not Beautiful, but what you wantNov 02, 2005

By the far the best of the basketball games on the PSP. At least in this game you make some shots and can drive the lane without picking up your dribble (NBA 06 messed both of these up). Decent animations, average to below average graphics. Fast and fun gameplay. Bad: at least a 1-2 second pause everytime a shot is made. Not as much control as in the console version. The Good: More control than NBA street. More fun than NBA 06' (too accurate of shot percentage can be a bad thing). My advice: If you need a b-ball game now. Get this one and only this one. If not, wait a couple of months and pick it up for cheap on ebay or your local used game carrier.
