Great game, but with a few flawsFeb 17, 2006
This game is like no other James Bond game before for two reasons: you're not James Bond, and you can dual-wield weapons.
Pros
With the dual-wielding weapon system, you can be shooting an Uzi in one hand and a pistol in the other (there's a bunch of different combinations). Some weapons are too heavy and require you to use both hands, but they're like a bazooka or sniper rifle. What's weird is that instead of just walking over a weapon to pick it up, you touch the right or left hand icon when the name of the weapon shows up (you can choose which hand you want the weapon in).
The graphics are really pretty good. It really looks realistic.
I like how you can go up and hit people with your gun or fist, and then you can take them hostage (it's more using them as human shields, because the other guys will shoot the hostage until he dies and then they'll aim at you. You have a gun in your hand when you take someone hostage, so you can shoot back at them).
A nice thing is the Goldeneye powers. You can see enemies through walls-and if you have a certain weapon you can shoot them through the wall. You can make enemies reload when you want them to, and you can turn on machine traps from far away (like a mining cart that runs over enemies). You can have a shield which will deflect bullets for a little while, or you can discharge it into a bad guy by punching them which kills them. Probably the best one of all is the last one. If you look at someone with it activated, a square will appear around them, and when you press the button, they will fly backwards and die.
The controls are pretty nice if you use the thumbpad; it's almost like using a mouse. It's a little hard to turn around fast, as you will have to move your finger across the touch screen a couple times to completely turn around, but it doesn't really affect anything.
Of course, there is no blood or anything, but they do cuss at the end, and although they don't actually say it, it's written at the bottom of the screen.
Cons
You can't stockpile weapons; the weapons you have in your hands are the only ones you have (besides the handgun and the grenades you get when you run out of weapons). That's not really a bad thing, but it would be nice to be able to pick up all the weapons that you find, but it's not a big problem.
Probably the worst thing about this game-and I don't even think it's a big problem-is the sound. For example, the music is not very good; it might be all right on some other kind of game, but not on a shooter game. You can turn the music off, anyway, so it doesn't matter. Some of the sounds are not very good, like when you get on a zip line, it sounds like a door squeaking over and over. Otherwise, though, the sounds are pretty good.
The other thing is, it's too short; I beat the game on easy in three days; don't take this in the wrong way, there's still plenty to do. You can go back and beat the game on normal, hard, or You Only Live Once (you only have one life). If you get tired of that, you can always do the Virtual Training, which is like multiplayer for one person. I haven't played it much, so I don't what it's like.
Also, the checkpoints are too far apart on some parts-not all the time, sometimes they're fine. Mainly on the last level, where they have one-hit kill weapons, and the checkpoints are so far apart that you end up doing the same thing over and over again.
I haven't tried multiplayer, so I don't know anything about it.
Overall, I think it's a fun game, and even after you beat the game there's still stuff to do. There are a few flaws, but it's still a great game.

Ok, but nothing spectacularJun 20, 2005
By Patrick I was a HUGE fan of Golden Eye for the N64. This game however is not even close to that game. I would even argue that the graphics arent even as nice.
Lets just go right into it: Scale out of 10
Storyline: 3,0
-Probably the weakest story line I have ever seen. This is NOT a 'get into it game,' its JUST a shooter. Nothing more.
Fun Factor: 6.0
-Multiplayer with others IS fun. 10x more entertaining than the standard game. Problemm is, you need friends to pull this off. IF this was a game you could play online with people like Unreal Tournament,Half-Life, etc, I would have nothing negative to say about it.
Sound: 2.0
-The music in this game sounds like it was created by me at 7 years old on my 1982 casio keyboard with synthesized sounds. Gun sounds are ok, but background music is.. well lets just say 'elevator music' would be more entertaining. To keep yourself sane, just turn the music volume ALL the way down.
Control/Gameplay: 7.5
-The dual weapon system is nice, but you CAN'T carry an arsenal of weapons like in the N64 version. Auto reloading is nice, but you have to manually pick up weapons with the touchpad to add more ammo.
-You can try the stylus if you want, personally I feel I have more control with it. However, I found myself holding the DS in the most awkward fashion with my right pinky somehow hitting the 'R' shoulder button. The best way to play this game is EXACTLY how you play a FPS on a PC.. Left hand moves the body forward and backward, right hand (with the thumbstrap) guides the view. Left index on L, right index finger on R. Takes some getting used to, as well as fiddling with the sensitivity of the touchpad, but when you get it right, accuracy in the game IS possible.
Graphics: 7.0
-Maybe I am being a stickler here, but compared to Wolfenstein 3D, these graphics are jaw dropping amazing. Compared to what I normally play on PC's, its a waste of time. The processors in the DS just cant keep up with the demands of the background being rendered; not to mention the tiny 128mb cart that all games are made on. I already wrote Nintendo a LONG email telling them they should increase the size of their cartridge if they ever want to make a descent game to compete with the Sony PSP. Their response was minimal, but professional.
Overall experience of Goldeneye on the DS: 6.0
-The only reason anyone should buy this is if you are going crazy waiting for a FPS for the DS and just cant wait until Metroid Prime Hunters comes out. This is a 'hold ya over' until then game, nothing more. Thankfully the options for control are similar to the Metroid Demo options, but they kindly added a sensitivity slide bar for the touchpad as well as invert mouse options. All in all its NOT a horrible game, but its by no means spectacular, its just 'OK.'

The best on the market for the DSJul 12, 2005

The horrific line up released by nintendo has made me almost regret my purchase of the Ds goldeneye rogue agent is the systems savior. This game is the first of hopefully many other games that utilixe the ds to its maximum capabilities and still provides a great gamming experience. The gameplay is similar to that of it's predecessor goldeneye (n64) which was a phenominal smash hit. The guns and movements are loose and that creates a real run and gun sensation that leaves you wanting more. The weapon variety is good but there are a few too many powerful weapons and that makes staying alive a challenge. The graphics are the best the DS can offer. And finally a game that fully incorporates the bottom touch screen. In all this is the best game for ds yet. It's incorporation of action, violence and skill, are an impresive display

Multiplayer Madness!!!Jul 10, 2005
To start off I have to say I have had more fun with the multiplayer part of this game than with the horrendously difficult solo play. If you and several friends have a DS (or if u r in the process of persuading a friend to get one), just buy it, or tell one of the richer ones of the group to buy it. It uses a one-card play (u only need one copy of the game to play multiplayer with your friends) AND u can play with up to 7 other kids. Just last weekend i bought this game and brought to a sleepover party type of thing. We (the four of us) were bored after running around until about 10:00 at nite and decided toi hang out in my friend's room. After discovering that we all had our DSs with each other, i suggested that i pop in Golden Eye to try out it's multi player with all of us - And man can i tell u... we didn't ANY sleep at that party!!! the whole time we played this game, and tho there is only one level to play in , we constantly found new areas within it and found new ways to slaughter each other. If u want a good sit-at-home-by-yourself- at-nite-and-play-sort-of FPS game... dont get it! If u wanna have an awesome time with friends and shoot the clock... go for it! (and by the way...its not too expensive either)
SO, HERE R THE QUICK TIPS ABOUT THIS GAME:
1) This game can get pretty frustrating at times in one player mode, but if you like a challenge, maybe you'll enjoy it (i personally thought that the one player was also fairly good tho i wanted to concentrate on the multiplayer aspects in this review a lot more.)
2)The game has all-right graphics that don't (or shouldn't) seem to bother anyone due to the eventual obsession of the actual gameplay that takes hold after several moments of playing the multiplayer mode.
3) The sound quality reminds me a bit of the original N64 version, but really, who cares about the sound quality?! (Well actually i do, but i thought it was all right any way)
4) I don't know if i'm persuading you about the multiplayer or not, but YES i HAVE to be so reppettitive when i say the multiplayer does not only have a pretty solid gameplay, but really gets into your head, making you want to play it until your eyes fall out.
5)The storyline isn't too great, though u somewhat forget about it during the actual mission because of the long levels. Also, there are not too many levels at all though the levels themselves take quite a long time.
OVERALL: The sound quality isn't any better or worse than the other games out right now for the DS, so what can you say about that? The graphics are pretty well designed; there are some pretty cool colors thrown into the game to make it interesting and it runs rather smoothly. The game throws a punch out there for a those gamers who like to tackle tough games like this one, too. The story line is also just above the low mark of decent, but others that i have talked to overlook that. This game just about earns itself an average yet fun "just-go-rent-it" rating of about 7.5 with these factors, but if you threw(and why wouldn't you)the multiplayer into consideration, this game is easily bumped up to about a 9.3 rating. Pretty good I would say. If you go online to several gaming websites, a lot of the critics seem to overlook the multiplayer parts of this game because apparrantly they just dont have friends to play the games with - they're just fatty losers. And I am telling you- if you just aren't sure about getting it, just rent it and play it with 2 or 3 other friends to see for yourself how addictive and fun this game really is. - SO. I hope this review helped u out a bit on deciding which game to purchase next, because unlike a lot of the games that have already come out for the NDS, i can assure u that this game will outlast time for quite a while and will be played a lot by u and your friends even after other new multiplayer games come out for the DS.
