Fantastic deal! I was considering trading my xbox into gamestop for a refurb'd because my disk drive was reading intermittently, reading games as dvds, and making a whole bunch of awful noises. Instead I chose to replace my drive myself for half the cost of what gamestop would give me for my xbox. Very good decision. The hardest part of the whole replacement was getting the case for the xbox apart. The tangs on the back are a pain in the butt to get open without tearing them up.
As far as flashing of the drive is concerned, you can flash the drive if you want but an easier way is to simply remove the circuit board from the old drive and replace the circuit board in the new drive with the one from the old drive. Now, on that note, if your circuit board is toast in your old drive them you WILL have to flash the new drive. From what I have seen however, the majority of the issues with the 360 drives are that the lens mechanism and motors in the drive wear out.
After swapping the boards (requires you to reattach 4 ribbon cables which I believe requires a tech level 3 out of 10) and reassembling the case the machine fired right up, made less noise than before, and properly read all of my discs. I would highly recommend this route vs buying a new or refurbished system from a retailer.
A note on the seller; Deal Barn was GREAT! I ordered the item on Tuesday morning and had the package waiting on my front door Thursday evening. Seller is in Indiana and I am in Kansas City so I think that was fantastic shipping time especially for USPS Priority mail. The shipping cost was a little high but definitely worth it for the 2 day turn around.

excellent product, exactly what i needed to replace the drive of my xbox. All I did was replace the new pcb with my old one to maintain the key that every drive and xbox is tuned to and viola, just like new.

OMG. Got this thing thinking it was gonna be super hard to install. Really jus takes a lil common sense to do.It took me all of 15 mins to chage out the drive. The Hardest thing was gettin the XBOX case open. One you get it open the rest is self explainitory. Change the chip out on the bottom of the drive, sealed it back up, and it was like havin a brand new 360 all over again!!! Big money saver!!!!

I wish I had read all of the negative reviews before purchasing. I would have saved myself a lot of time and hassle. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS ITEM if know nothing about "flashing" the drive. It DOES NOT WORK out of the box. In fact MICROSOFT may even ban you from XBOX LIVE for modifying your 360.
SHAME ON AMAZON FOR NOT PUTTING SOMETHING IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS PRODUCT!!!

When our Xbox died we thought it was done for. We were happy to learn that for 30 dollars we could have it back! The drive was harder to replace than originally thought but we are lucky to have an in house computer geek to assist (Dad). Any lay person could not have installed this one themselves. It is not just a matter of removing and reinstalling. The flash memory needed to be updated, or something like that. The son is uber happy to have his Xbox back! Mom and Dad may not. It was quite peaceful without it.
The product arrived quickly and before the scheduled arrival date.
