A solid entry for the 360Jun 29, 2006

Okay, I have been playing this for a couple of days now. I have mainly played the campaign portion of the game. I tried to go online but there isn't many games to pick up on right now. Hopefully that will change as more and more people pick this game up. I am a die hard flight sim lover. I have several flight sims on the computer as well as several of the Ace Combat series. I wil say that the detail of the airplanes and armament on this game are extremely high and the jets look great.
There is bound to be comparisons of this game to the Ace Combat series. While comparing these two are like comparing apples and oranges, they each have their own sweet spots. Over G strives on more realism than Ace Combat. While you can fly on a novice level, it severely hampers your flight abilities. Once you switch over to the more realistic normal mode, you can enjoy barrel rolls and tight turns and the response feels great. The novice mode feels like your flying through mud.
You can set your plane up before each mission either with a recommended setup or choosing your own missile selection. There is a well appreciated range of missile and bombs to suit every mission. While yes, you can have a great view in the cockpit, I have yet to see a true 360 degree field of vision. It is more like 280 degrees.
The missions so far have been varied nicely. The main disappointment I have had is with the music selection. The Ace Combat series had great music and not only that but great chatter on the radio that really pulled you into believing that you were the one hero of the war. Of any flight game I have played, Ace Combat 5 has done this better than any other. Atleat with the 360 you can play your personal selection of music off the hard drive.
The explosions are decently animated with contrails visible after the jet or tank blows and the contrails move in the direction of the path of flight, which adds nicely to the realism. While flying, you can enjoy a view of your jet and you can notice the exhaust fumes as they exit the engine and also distort the view of the graphics behind the plane. This also adds nicely to the touch of realism.
While this is a solid entry for the 360, I can only hope that the next game improves on this one. If you are a hard core flight sim lover, you have to buy this. If you enjoyed Ace Combat, you may want to rent this game before buying it because it might not be exactly what you are expecting in relation to the Ace Combat series. Althought this game is on a console, it is more in line with what is available on PC's rather than what is previously available for consoles. Enjoy.

It is not an arcade game but a great combat simAug 01, 2006

I have read many reviews for this game stating that the planes handle sluggish and are not realistic. I do not agree and in fact the reason the plane is sluggish is probably because you are flying with your air brakes on which causes the controller to vibrate.
I have played the game on easy and expert and it is great fun both ways. If you do decide to play on expert it will really make you think and you dont have time to second guess yourself. Is it hard to dodge missles? No, not if you know what kind they are. If you do not see "Launch" then you are being faced with a IR missle and turning on your afterburner will just draw the missle in. Instead, cut power and hit flare/chaff until threat is gone.
I really love this game and is very very similar to the old F-15 and F-16 games from the day. I still cant land on a carrier though.
If you want to fly and shoot down planes and not get the feel of what real combat is kinda like, do not get this game. This is as close as it gets for many of us and the game is awesome.

Great 360 GameJul 25, 2006
By Arjun I just got my 360 a few weeks ago, and this was the first game that I got. At first, I thought it was horrible, I thought the graphics were mediocre, and the cartoonish mission briefing style was cheesy. However, my attitude towards the game greatly changed once I beat North America (the first level). The graphics are outstanding, especially the African rivers and the Far East cities. You get new planes after various missions that keep every level different from the one before it. This is certainly a game capable of sucking away 6 hours of your weekend. I highly reccomend it to anyone who is a fan of flight or war games. I haven't played it on live, but i hear its pretty good. A MUST OWN FOR 360 OWNERS!!!

Three stars is about right!!!!!Oct 05, 2006

I served four years in the Air Force so I was excited about this game coming out. About time xbox made a modern jet game!!! Now to the game... I was expecting a lot more from it to tell the truth. The graphics are amazing however the gameplay is terrible especially in novice mode. In novice mode, your plane is way too slow and difficult to turn. As another poster stated it feels like your flying through mud. When I switched over to expert mode, it seemed like the jet flew easier however defeating the enemies became way too hard. On some missions right when you start, someones already firing missles at you and sometimes two at once.
Also the game becomes very repetitive. There only so many times you can go out and "intercept" incoming aircraft and ships before you feel like you are doing the same thing over and over again.
As for during the options and briefing menus/screens, there wasnt much effort put into them. Between missions your spoken to by still pictures of cartoons... they dont even move. Between the game missions, it looks like a super nintendo game.
Also, the music SUCKS!!! I'd have to say this is the worst part of the game. Who ever made this game obviously has never seen the movie TOP GUN. The music is so far from what a real jet pilot would listen to its rediculous!!
So basically, it's an average game. Something that can be enjoyed for a while however it'll get old quick. Rent it so you wont have to waste 60 dollars on it. This is a thirty dollar game not sixty.

Not bad for the first modern air combat game for the 360Jul 05, 2006
By J. Martino A lot of people are comparing this game to Ace Combat for the PS2 and the two games could not be more different. First off Over G is more of a flight sim. I have heard compliants that there is no feeling of speed, that your plane is like a blimp floating in space. Think of it this way, if you are in a plane at 30,000 feet and look out the window does it feel like you are going 500mph? No, it seems like you are floating.
The planes do not react like the do in Ace Combat, as you take into effect G forces and stress on the air craft, turns are wide as they would be in real life. You dont have unlimited afterburner and unlimited fuel like in Ace Combat.
Lets face it modern air combat is very impersonal, not like WWII where you fly right up on the enemy and waste them with the machine gun. In modern flight combat you shoot the enemy from miles away. Its kill before the enemy sees you. Some may find that boring.
Graphicly this game is amazing, the planes are beautifully rendered the details are amazing. The ground detail could have been done much better as you fly close to the ground it looks like carpeting, they could have done a better job there.
My only complaints of this game are as follows
1. There are no markers as to what you need to do in a mission, you could fly around and not know where to go. When you stumble on an enemy you get the pointer on where they are going
2. Sound is horrible, there is hardly any radio chatter, you can not hear your machine gun or missiles being fired. Music reminds me of some old NES game.
3. It is difficult to shake enemy missiles, once you are locked on it seems futile to dodge the missile, even with flares and hard turns.
4. You have very limited missiles not enough to complete some missions, which leaves you wondering what to do. I understand that as a flight sim the amount of missiles is realistic and you can direct your wingman to destroy targets, but they are not very good and often miss the targets.
Positives
1. Graphics are beautiful, plane details blow you away.
2. The physics of the game are great, too much G forces will cause the screen to go black as if the pilot was blacking out.
3. Take off and landings are very cool, you can feel the cross wind on the aircraft carrier.
4. The different views (inside the plane, behind etc. are great it gives you several options)
Overall this is a great addition to the 360 lineup I would hope they make a second one and continue to refine it. It can only get better.
