4Fun Ratchet World, Nice Co-Op GameplayOct 29, 2005
By Lisa Shea "medieval swordfighting enthusiast"
We really love the Ratchet and Clank series of games, with the gameplay, humor and general mayhem. Deadlocked is NOT an adventure game like the others - it's a gladiator combat game. You don't even have Clank with you for most of the game.

It's not that this game is "bad" - but it's different. I really did like the whole exploring-worlds theme of the previous games. The gladiator matches in those were interesting diversions but I was always happy when they were over. In this game, that's all that you get. You go from arena to arena, mindlessly bashing away at enemies and trying to stay alive.

There are all sorts of mini-games that you unlock along the way - hoverbike races involving traditional follow-the-circles, shooting games, flying games, and much more. The humor is still quite fun, although it's now a very odd mix of very adult humor and very kiddy humor. The game is rated Teen so the adult humor is reasonably OK I suppose, depending on how protective you are of younger teens.

The weapons upgrades are as usual amazingly fun - and you get to have "mods" to your weapons like acid and napalm to customise them to your liking. You can do all sorts of mixes and matches to get just the feel that you want.

The graphics are of good quality - I've always enjoyed the graphic style of the Ratchet and Clank games so this provides more of the same. The sound is reasonably good, although we do find some really repetitive, annoying tracks in there. We also had the game completely freeze up on us a few times. Maybe it needed just a little more QA before it was released.

The multiplayer modes are a really nice extension of the game. I really enjoy playing a game with a friend, so anything with co-op in it is great.

I suppose on the up side that if this had not come out, we would have just been sitting here twiddling our thumbs until the next "real" release of Ratchet and Clank came out. So in that sense, I'm really happy to have this out as filler, to keep us busy until then. We definitely ran out to grab this as soon as it was released, even though it wasn't (as far as we were concerned) a fully fledged Ratchet and Clank game to plow through.

Well Recommended!

Rating? 4/5

4Ratchet: DeadlockedNov 03, 2005
By Yokokorama "Yoko"
I personally have loved all the previous Ratchet and Clank games with their destruction, humor, and amazing gameplay, but this one is nothing like the previous games.

For one thing, this game is not an adventure game like the others, it is, like many people have said; a gladiator game. Yes, you do get to explore the levels (meaning you are not exactly trapped in an arena the whole time as you might have thought), but there is no strategy in the game. To beat the levels, all you have to do is mindlessly shoot-up and bash away your opponents. Don't get me wrong, I love the gladiator fights, for they were in all the previous games, and they were extremely fun, but I was always glad to finish them and go back to the adventure, but in this game, gladiator fights is all you've got.

Now, the weapon arsenal in this game is much better than in the previous game! You can customize your weapons to your satisfaction! In this game, you are also provided with different weapons, such as the "Dual Vipers" that you see Ratchet holding on the cover-page. You are also provided with two upgradable robots (yes, they are the ones you see on the cover) which help you defeat your enemies! Since you don't get to have Clank with you, you are given these robots instead of him, and they are great!

The gameplay and graphics in this game beats the ones in all the other games, for the destruction is more detailed than ever! The gameplay is also very good as well! You can do back-flips and roll-overs to avoid getting shot by incoming bullets! The gameplay and graphics in this game definetly deserve an "A+"!

The humor in this game is as good as ever! Just like the previous Ratchet games, this game is filled with loads of humor to keep you laughing your head off! Also, when in the gladiator fights, you the commentary people throw a few funny jokes every while and then, and they don't repeat the same jokes over-and-over again like in some wrestling games I have played.

Overall, this game is a great game, but as I have said before, I didn't exactly like the fact that this game barely has any adventure, but it is still a very great game! If the game had some more adventure, it would have been the perfect game! For people who like Unreal games, this game is for you!

A well recommended game!

Rating? I give it a 9.1/10, because the lack of adventure was quite a major flaw.

Additional recommendations? Rent it first, and play it, and see if you like it, because I personally liked it, but it depends on what person is playing it.

3If you like arena battles, you're all set.Nov 01, 2005

I am really disappointed with this game (and I loved the other Ratchet & Clank games). This game just moves from one arena battle to the next (in the form of very small planets), so you don't get the adventures you do with the previous games. There is a cooperative mode where two players can play, but you need a big tv because it's like watching a couple of microbes run around.

5good game ! didn't expect it to be this good .Nov 17, 2005
By ps2 gamer "star wars"
I personally enjoyed this game . It was pretty good. Although the main gameplay is mainly more focused on action this time around , it still has some platforming, and a lot of variety. The story starts out with ratchet , clank , and big al (from the first and third games)all set out to find a certain hero named captain starshield, that has been missing for a long time. They hear he was last seen at a region of the galaxy called the shadow sector. They set out to find him , and when they get to the shadow sector ,their ship is attacked by a gruop of robots , and they are brought to a certain space station . Here, Ratchet is forced to compete in an illegal combat sport called dreadzone. This is an arena-style show were captured heroes fight different enemies and complete various challenges in order to win their freedom . This sport is headed by a man called gleeman vox, who is the founder of the show.To make sure that Ratchet and Clank don't escape, deadlock collars are put around their necks. These are deadly devices, that will explode if they become uncooperative, try to escape, or do anything that is against the rules. So Ratchet is forced to compete in this show, until he and clank can find a way to escape.

Now, there are a few changes to the game . First, it is focused more on action this time around , although there are still some platforming challenges here and there, so don't be discouraged . Secondly , Clank will not be on Ratchet's back anymore , and you won't get to control him . But don't worry , he will still be in the game .He will function as you mission control engineer , which monitors your progress through Dreadzone , and you'll still get to interact with him a lot .

Also , as compensation for Clank's "loss", you will get two combat bots that will fight alongside you. These things are great , and their AI is great , so they'll make any stupid mistakes that will really annoy you. they have about 3 different weapons, that they'll use of their own accord (don't worry about this , as they choose them pretty wisely , and not just randomly and in a stupid way ). They also have 1 special attack that's very strong , and they can use it when it's available , and they use it only when you command them to. besides that, they also have about 5 gadgets that you can tell them to use whenever you need to . Their gadgets are really cool , and they are things like creating a defensive shield aroung you or the other bot when you're completing a certain task , or throwing an EMP grenade at electronic devices to shut them down (However, you'll only get to use these gadgets at certain points, like in the previous games.)You can also customize your bots with different heads and paint jobs.

The weapons have also undergone a big change. This time you only have 10 weapons, but they are customizable. You can add tons of different mods to them . There are two types of mods:

alpha mods , and omega mods.

the omega mods add special qualities to your weapon , like the morph mod ,which turns enemies into animals, the insanity mod, which causes enemies to attack each other, and the naplam mod, which creats big pools of lava with each shot. The alpha mods just improve your weapons' performance, and they improve things like the ammo capacity of a weapon , the rate of fire of a weapon , etc.

Co-op mode has also been added , and you'll be able to play the entire story mode with a friend. This friend will replace your combat bots, and both you and he will have all the gadgets that your robots have. Speaking of multiplayer , versus mode and online mode have also returned. The vs. multiplayer inculdes 5 different mods , one of them being conquest mode, which is an improved mode of siege from the third game. Here , you have to capture more nodes than the opposing team , and if you hold a node long enough , you can get upgrades for it.

The only downside to this game is that some people might not like the fact that it is focused more on action this time , although that didn't bother me.

Overall this is a fun game , with lots of variety , great graphics, good weapon upgrading system, and great multiplayer modes. You can even choose the difficulty level , ranging from 1-5. I recommend this game to anyone.

4A Different Chapter in the Ratchet & Clank Saga...Oct 28, 2005
By Michael Cheney
Like anyone else interested enough to write a Ratchet & Clank I eagerly anticipated the 4th installment; Ratchet Deadlocked... I like the game but it is considerably different than the other Ratchet titles in terms of game play and back ground story... This time, during single player mode, Clank is in a background or 'Mission Engineer'... this change reminds me of the Metal Gear Solid games... the game play is exceptionally fast and furious... the use of troop droids while in combat adds to the intensity... there seems to be lees of a story board to this title... there are several modes of team play now... a new one being Side-by-Side or Cooperative Missions... there also is a multi player mode that reminds me of Quake or Unreal style game play... over all I'm appreciative of there being a new Ratchet title but it is taking some getting used too and is slowly growing on me... Don't get me wrong, it's just that Up your Arsenal is a tough act to follow...
