4Hate this game...yet find myself keep playing again and again..Apr 13, 2009
By Christian H. Kim
This game is known as 'Shutokou Battle' in Japan and this 'popular' series had been published by Crave under the title 'Tokyo Xtreme Racer' in the States, yet Konami decided to publish PSP version somehow.

First, I am a big fan of the series and perhaps played every version for DC, PS2, and PSP. That's why I've cleared the game like 5 times already despite of its many shortcomings.

Let me briefly talk about its shrotcomings from a devoted fan's perspective.

1) Loading time: I'm grateful to play it on PSP but come'on.. loading is pretty long... even for a PSP game. I still don't understand how I manage to finish this game over 5 times given my intolerance for loading in video game; guess I really like this seris. But you've been warned.

2) Severely limited course: Map is base on Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2, and I think it's good enough for a portable game. However, (1) the race ends once you hit this 'end' even if your life meter is still on, and (2) you don't get to make choice when the highway is diverging; it's been pre-determined already for you.

3) Difficulty: The very thing that pulled me into this series was its insane difficulty (well, at leaset for me), especially the very first game for Dreamcast. Yes, the difficulty has been compromised as the series expanded in other aspects, however, I couldn't find any of the 'persistant' rivals like previous series. It doesn't matter if it's one of the 12 Generals you are racing against..yes, they are really fast on a straight line but once you make that corner smoothly, even they get behind. What a disappointment.

4) No Honda: Well, this game pretty much has most of the Japanese car makers except Honda. There is one custom car which looks like NSX, but that's about it. It's not a big deal since the developer, Genki, had been using all the cars without proper license.. just a personal note.

5) Sound Volume: This is annoying because full sound is barely audible unless you are playing when everyone's asleep. I recommend using headphone but wished the volume could've been louder. Is it too much to ask when you have to deal with insane loading time??

Now.. I don't want to give you the impression that ths game is nothing but a waste when it does hold its own ground, however.

1) You get to play Tokyo Xtreme Racer on PSP, period. Yes, it's been infected with loading time, limited course and etc, however, it's still Tokyo Xtreme Racer game...on a portable. It's enough for me.

2) It has pretty extensive upgrade in performance and cosmetic. I love to watch my modified cars while racing through the back mirror view, and it looks real nice.

3) It still has lot of 'crazy' rivals, which you have to satisfy special requirements to recruit them. Racing rivals to satisfy certain requirements and recruiting every single one of them out there is, believe it or not, pretty fun.

4) It has this team battle mode, which is used to expand your territory. You have to race in rival's territory and defeat its memebers to lower their loyalty and recruit them. Once the rival's dominace of the area falls below 50%, then you can challenge them in a team battle. If you win, it becomes your territory. If you lose, there goes your team's loyalty.

Well, I guess you gotta love the series to tolerate all the shortcomings I mentioned above, however, it's a great deal given its price these days. I hope Genki addresses all the issues and make another one for PSP soon.

Oh, there is this real ending which can be obtained. I'm not so sure of its requirement, but it happens when I recruit all the rivals with 100% loyalty on them.

I hope you enjoy it.

4pointless for speed lovers, but great for race fans who love cars in generalMay 26, 2006

first off, if your favorite game is NFS becase you like the thrill of speed, your better off not getting this game.

many people may have seen bad remarks about this game off IGN or Gamespot, but in reality, the game is not half bad

you come face to face with many cars in the garage, most of which are cars that one may see criuising down the highway, but as you go along, you may be able to double, or even triple the performance of your cars. there are also many other things that can be upgraded, and one can see the diffrence when racing. the only sad parts about the tuning section is that you cannot mix and match bumpers with sideskirts(they have pre-made kits), and the engine tuning section of the car is terrible. normally, the engine tuning should be least to greatest from 1st gear to 6th, but in the game, 6th is the least and 1st is the greatest, and the only thing one can do about it is slightly alter the gears and nothing else. this causes the awkward situation in which i was racing at 150MPH on 2ND GEAR!

Now onward to the racing. the racing can be considered terrible by 2fast2furious and NFS lovers, but deep down, it's actually quite fun. although your car dosen't turn very well, you must do other tricks to make it slide through. this is quite amusing at some points. The racing system is quite unique too. it's either first one past the finish line or first one to deplete their opponent's "spirit gauge" which is sort of like a life bar that depletes when you pull a certain distance ahead or when they crash. if their's deplets, so does yours, which make the game quite intense at some points. the oppnents have ummm... unique names, such as "caffine times three" or "happy rabbit" or something. their names reflect their attitude towards racing, so if you manage to recruit them, you will get a slight with of commantary which reflects their names. most opponensts are easy, and can be beaten by tapping the wall while they lose like 100 MPH by braking hard long before the turn. now you may have your doubts about this game. "is it really fun?". there are also certain "wanders" in all areas, and each area has at least 1 high level wanderer which has +40 level. they are quite challenging to beat at some times, and even if you beat them, they may not join your team. their excuses are based on thier history, and if you can satisfy them, you can recruit them, into your team. you can also widen you domination from 1 area to the whole 15 by team battling a team who's domination of an area drops below 50%. you deplete their domination by recruiting ther area's rivals onto your team. this is not always easy, especially when you are the only one of 2 teams remaining, for their leaders can also attempt to recruit you team members.

overall, this game is a great game, but it lacks a few quality racing game aspects.

2This game is horrible.Mar 02, 2006

This is a sequel to tokyo xtreme racing on the major consoles. While the other games are good, not great, this one is horrible. You will wait through loading times more than actual racing. When you do race, the opponents are way too easy and the tracks are monotonous. Go with need for speed underground rivals. It's much better. Midnight club 3 is probably better too, although i've not played it.
