On the surface, it looks just like the side-scrolling platform games of the 16-bit era. You'll find the requisite jumps, attacks, tricks of timing, and monsters (evil pigs, no less!). But Tomba adds to this tried-and-true formula. There are numerous "events" Tomba must complete in order to advance through the game. For instance, near the beginning of the game, you learn that you must clear some fog in order to move forward. It's up to you to find out how to complete this task; it takes a bit of exploration to figure this puzzle out. Once you've gotten rid of the fog, you have "cleared" an event, and you can move on. Not all events are so straightforward; some tasks are downright cryptic, and you can have several events to clear at any one time, so playing Tomba requires some concentration. Tomba sports fresh, very cheerful graphics, decent sound and music appropriate for a platform game, and smooth controls. There's a lot of moves to master, but signposts along the way teach you how to use your controller as you progress through the game. Some areas of the game allow you to explore the foreground and the background of the level as separate areas, but don't let that fool you: Tomba is at heart a 2D game. The only real drawback to playing Tomba is the limited ability to save your progress. In order to save a game, you must find one of the special signposts scattered throughout the levels; it's a chore to save your game when you want to. A much more logical option would have allowed you to save your progress whenever you cleared an event. But that's just a minor complaint. Tomba is a great game well suited for anyone who wants a break from the glut of 3D action games out there. --John Broady --Copyright ©1999 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. Fun for a 7 year old or a 21 year oldFeb 03, 2002
First, I have to say that I love this game. My little brother (he is 7, I'm 21) discovered the game on a demo disk that came with our Playstation. As soon as we got it we both had to start a game. The game is simplistic enough that he could play on his own but challenging enough that I never lost interest in the game. The individual "events" that you have to clear can sometimes be a little difficult to figure out, but usually the supporting characters that you "talk" to in the game give you enough hints to work out the solution.

The best game I've played so far!Sep 04, 2004

I play a lot of games, and it seems like since I've played Tomba, nothing compares to it. It's an extreme strategy game that takes some brains to figure out. It's an absolutely incredible game, and now that it's so hard to find, it really stinks. My cd's keep wearing out from playing so much and I have to buy the game over and over again at $20 a pop cause it's so rare. Play Tomba! and love it!

18 year old still loves this "childish" gameJun 25, 2001
By justin meyer I bought this game for my younger, 10 year old brother. The graphics were very simplistic and colorfull, obviously designed for children. However, after watching him play for a few days, I decided to begin my own game. And what I discovered was one of the most adictive, and difficult games I have ever played. It seems like a simple, childish game at first; however it progresses into much more. Like a 2-D zelda game, it gives the player the ability to explore a multitude of worlds. Yet it is far more challenging than any zelda game that i have ever played. It gives the player that great feeling of discovery, be it of a new level or weapon, that continues throught the gameplay. I am disapointed that I am only the first review of this game. Please, buy this game. It is truely one of the unknown gems of the gaming world.

Great Game, bad priceOct 14, 2000
This game is great, except for the fact that it is 2 years old. I mean, come on, this game already has a sequel out for it and it's still priced at 40 dollars. That's ridiculous! I guess I'll have to buy it at EBWorld or Best Buy
